How Do I Register a Trade Name?

If the business name is your name, registration is advisable but not required. If the business name is not your name, registration is required. Registration of your trade name generally protects your trade name from use by any other business in the county. However, if you are not incorporated, your business name may not be protected. Your trade name certificate must be purchased at your local stationery store or obtained at the County Clerk’s Office.

Bring four (4) completed and notarized copies to your local county court house.

To register a Sole Proprietorship or General Partnership under a trade name or name including “and Company” or “& Co.,” contact the County Clerk in the county or counties where business will be conducted.

The Mercer County Clerk’s Office is located on the first floor of the old court house at:

209 South Broad St.
Trenton, NJ 08650
Room 100
Phone: 609-989-6464

Is a business license needed?
